Star Strike

Stars strike

in my surrender,

I am choking up dust

coughing up

yesterday’s post-mortem

I blacken my eyes with coal,

tread gently on the footsteps of loss,

even gentler on the heels of sorrow

I hug my knees into my chest

and wonder to myself

is this the right time

for me to shine
